Compare the same kind of cost
Accommodation-only prices are not whole living budgets. A shared room, a private bedroom in a shared flat and a self-contained studio also cover different things. The examples below identify their scope and retain important limitations in the university’s figures.
A page review date means the published source was checked; it does not make an undated tariff a current quotation. For countries and cities without a verified example here, use the university housing office rather than importing another city’s budget.
- Record currency, price per person or per property, and the exact number of payable months.
- Ask whether heating, electricity, water, internet and building charges are included, capped or billed separately.
- Allow separately for food, local transport, phone, laundry, study materials and personal spending.
- Add one-off setup costs and refundable deposits to your cash-flow plan, without counting a returned deposit as permanent spending.
Choose a location for your course, not just the city centre
Ask where your teaching will actually take place in each year: lectures, skills laboratories, hospitals, community placements and veterinary sites may be in different places. Check the journey at the times you will travel and allow for early starts or evening finishes.
Before choosing a long lease, ask whether later-year placements involve moving to another city or country. If you need an accessible room or particular facilities, confirm availability and arrangements directly with the university before paying.
Get the price and contract in writing
For a residence, confirm that you have a room allocation, not just a place on a waiting list. For a private rental, obtain the proposed contract in a language you understand and check any translation with an independent adviser if needed.
Deposit rules and tenant protections depend on the destination; do not assume the UK system applies. Ask the university housing team where to find local tenant advice and how to resolve a dispute.
- Exact address, room type, permitted occupants and move-in/move-out dates.
- Rent, deposit, reservation or agency charges, payment dates and the verified payee.
- Included bills, limits, meter readings and responsibility for additional charges.
- Cancellation, visa-refusal, withdrawal, early-termination and deposit-return conditions.
- Repairs, inventory, guest rules, guarantor requirements and any need for proof of accommodation for immigration.
Verify the provider before sending money
Charles University’s private-accommodation guidance warns about pressure to send money before a lease is signed and fabricated urgency. Independently check who is offering the property and their authority to rent it; a convincing listing or copied university logo is not verification.
Use the university housing office to check unfamiliar routes. View the room yourself or arrange a reliable viewing where practical, check the address and contract, and confirm payment details through an established contact if they change. Keep the agreement and payment receipts.
Plan the move-in and check the room
Confirm key collection, reception hours and what happens if your arrival is delayed. If permanent housing is not confirmed, budget for legitimate short-term accommodation and ask the university for help before travel.
At move-in, record the room’s condition and any meter readings with the provider, report faults promptly and retain the inventory. Keep the provider’s repair contact and the university support contact available. Use the arrival checklist for enrolment and residence tasks without recording personal documents on MedStudy.

Examples to help you compare
These examples are starting points, not a complete list or a personal offer. Check the scope and date with the official provider.
Kaunas: LSMU Dormitory 1
- Published rent: €150–250 per person per month. The university’s general dormitory guidance includes heating, water, electricity, internet and common-kitchen use.
- First-year students can apply after enrolment; a place is not guaranteed. Add food, transport and other spending separately. The page does not label this as a 2027/28 tariff: confirm your room and contract price.
Riga: RSU living-cost guidance
- RSU suggests at least €1,200 per month including accommodation. The same page’s illustrative table totals €1,050 with shared services and €1,500 without sharing.
- These figures are inconsistent and are guidance, not quotations. Use a current rent-and-bills quote and your own spending estimate. University hostel rooms are allocated first come, first served.
Nicosia: Medical School living-cost estimate
- The Medical School’s financial-information page estimates a minimum of €12,000 for a whole year in Nicosia. This is an annual living-cost guide, not a monthly rent quote.
- Tuition, programme charges and any costs associated with clinical training elsewhere are separate. Confirm your actual housing, bills and study location before using it as a budget.
Prague: Charles University, Second Faculty of Medicine
- The faculty lists university hall accommodation at approximately €210 per month, with limited capacity. This is not a whole living budget or a guarantee of a room.
- The source is specific to the Second Faculty of Medicine. Check the current residence tariff, facilities, eligibility and booking route for your own faculty; do not assume it applies to every Charles University programme.
